Restored Destiny

On Christmas Eve, our five-year-old grandson had finished dinner and wanted to play as the rest of us finished the meal. Presents had already been opened and he wanted to get back to playing! A few minutes later he came back to the table and grabbed my hand, “Gigi, you need to come here.”

I could tell by the look on his face that he wasn’t asking me to come play, but to see something…

His little hand in mine, he led me over to the window where we had a Christmas decoration that had caught his attention. And no wonder. It was large red metal truck. In the bed of the truck were two Christmas trees and a large present. The headlights and other parts of the truck lit up. Normally it had been on a counter where he could see it, but not play with it. But it had been moved to the floor—within his reach—as we moved food to the counter in the place where it had been displayed.
As we reached the truck he pointed at the gift in the bed. He had believed it was a real gift and tried to pull it out of the truck, pulling the ribbon off.

“Honey, this isn’t a toy. It’s a decoration and that’s not a real gift,” I explained as I worked to fix the broken box and pin the ribbon back in place.

Later I reflected on the incident and thought of how our grandson’s life/presence was a gift and had brought restoration to places in our family.

If you are a grandparent, you know that grandkids are special not only to us—but to God. And how God sometimes uses grandkids to restore destiny.

An overlooked incident in the Bible reveals that and how God reconnected destiny through a grandchild.

This encouraging passage was brought to my attention over Christmas when one of our friends, Brian S., sent me an insightful email and scriptures that will give you hope.

It is in 1 Chronicles 6:33, These are the ones who served with their sons: From the sons of the Kohathites were Heman the singer, the son of Joel, the son of Samuel.

How many times have we all probably read that and didn’t realize there was a miracle revealed in that sentence?

It begins when we recognize that Heman the singer/worshipper serving under David and Solomon’s reigns, was the grandson of the prophet Samuel.

Although Samuel followed after God his entire life, his sons didn’t follow in his footsteps. We know that from I Samuel 8:1-3, Now it came about, when Samuel was old, that he appointed his sons as judges over Israel. The name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judging in Beersheba. His sons, however, did not walk in his ways but turned aside after dishonest gain, and they took bribes and perverted justice.

Samuel’s sons were a mess. Because the people couldn’t trust them, as they had Samuel, they began to demand a king.

Although Samuel’s sons chose the wrong path, God restored and reconnected Samuel’s lineage and legacy through his grandson Heman, who was a worshipper. Heman followed after God and in the ways of his grandfather.

God restored destiny through the grandson, who picked back up with God and the destiny for their lineage. God can do that for you and your family.

My grandson smiled as I finished repairing the gift box and put the red truck back on the counter--away from curious hands! And I smiled, that at least that situation was an easy fix. As you know, some things don’t repair that quickly. But this is a reminder that God can fix anything.

As we begin 2025, let’s link arms to stand fast for our families. Our kids, grandkids, great-grandkids and extended family. God has given us a promise.

As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord (Joshua 24:15).

As a parent or grandparent we sit in a seat of authority in our family lineage to call wayward family members back to God and restoration. It doesn’t matter what it looks like in the natural, remember God tells us that “while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal (2 Cor 4:18).

Don’t be moved by natural circumstances. Plant your feet, your heart and your mouth to declare God’s Word over your family for restoration for He said He would watch over His Word to perform it!
