Each time you take one step forward, are you hit with a barrage that sends you several steps back? Have you told God, “I will be a bold witness for you,” only to immediately face a backlash that makes you think, “I won’t do that again!”
 
There isn’t a single person reading this who hasn’t experienced something similar. Those are tactics straight from Satan’s playbook to keep us so busy fighting battles, we can’t take ground.
 
Gideon was no different until God showed him who he was and reminded him of who He was!
 
Read Judges chapters 6-8 about Gideon. The Israelites had been oppressed by the Midianites for seven years. The Israelites had done evil, and so God’s blessing & protection had been removed. The word “Midianites” means “strife, judgment and habits.”
 
Every time the Israelites sowed seed to grow food, the Midianites swooped down in droves to take their harvest. Each time the Israelites started to see a breakthrough, it would be stolen. They were in fear, which is where we first learn about Gideon.
 
Gideon was threshing his harvest in a winepress to hide it from the Midianites. A family winepress would have been a small rock structure to press grapes. It would have been a very inconvenient place to thresh wheat. Gideon was afraid, like everyone else. Have you ever been there? We all have. But the good news is God meets us where we are and shows us His power.
 
THE CALLING
The angel of the Lord showed up while Gideon was in the winepress. It was there that the angel said, “The Lord is with you, O valiant warrior!” (Judges 6:12).
 
Was Gideon acting like a valiant warrior? No. Did he see himself as a valiant warrior? It doesn’t seem like it. He    wasn’t a leader with a wise strategy to dispel the Midianites.
 
He was only in survival mode.
 
However, the angel of the Lord spoke to Gideon’s identity--who he really was—a valiant warrior.
 
When we understand our identity, we begin to understand our calling and destiny. They are all linked.
 
¨ Calling is connected to our identity.
¨ Gifting is connected to our ability.
¨ Anointing is connected to our purpose
 
Gideon was created to be a leader. God was anointing him to deliver Israel. That was his purpose.
 
WHO ARE YOU?
What is your purpose and identity? This is a message for you and for our nation because God never changes.
 

• When the Israelites cried to the Lord because of the oppression of the Midianites, He raised up a deliverer for them. (Judges 6:7) God will deliver you.
• A prophet came to remind them of what God had done for them in the past and delivered them from the hand of Pharaoh. God wants you to remember NOTHING is too difficult for Him.
• He told Gideon not to fear. Why? Because it was easy to have fear. Do not fear your circumstances. God is greater.
• The Midianites gained advantage because the Israelites had sinned. (Judges 6:8-10) If there is an area where you have sinned and need to repent, that is the first step before breakthrough can begin.

 
GOD’S WORD TO GIDEON AND TO YOU!
“Go in this your strength and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian. Have I not sent you?” (Judges 6:14).
 
You may not feel like you have any strength, but the Lord is refilling you and empowering you with HIS strength from the “Midianites” (the relentless attack) that has risen against you.
 
The Mideonites represent the areas where you have experienced strife, judgment, harassment or habits that you can’t seem to gain the victory over and which keep coming at you.
 
Why did God remind them of how He delivered their people from Pharaoh? Because they needed to remember that God does the impossible. Not only did He part the Red Sea, but they walked across on dry ground.
 
AND He caused the Red Sea to fold back over on their enemies so that they were gone in an instant.
 
Gideon didn’t suddenly become a mighty warrior. That was a process. He put out two fleeces because he didn’t believe the angel. You may not believe the things God has told you He will do either. But He will help you.
 
OBEDIENCE IS KEY!
Gideon’s first assignment was to stop the idol worship by tearing down the altar to Baal and the Asherah pole on his father’s property. And then instructed to build an altar to God. Gideon was afraid, and so did it in the middle of the night. But he did it! (Judges 6:25-26)
 
The more he obeyed, the more his courage grew and the stronger he became. God gave him words of encouragement along the way to let him know He was with him. All Gideon had to do was obey.
 
That is a word for you. Is there an area in which you need to repent for disobeying? Do it. Do you lack identity? Not sure what you are supposed to do? God wants to show you who you are and what He has called you to do. But once He does, will you be willing take Him at His Word to walk it out?
 
Gideon had a choice. So do we.
 
If you under attack by the “Midianites” (harassment, strife, judgment, habits) and feel like you are being pushed back at every step, realize you are a VALIANT WARRIOR and that God has a plan to deliver you and raise you up.
 
Remember who He is and let Him show you who you are!
